European Union (EU) yesterday unfolded plans to spend N9.2 billion on community development projects in the nine Niger Delta states as parts of strategy to reduce poverty in the oil producing communities.

The amount to be provided by EU under the Micro-Projects Programmes (MPP9) represents 75 per cent of the total amount to be spent by both the benefiting communities, local and state governments.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria, Mr David MacRae, said the amount from the ninth European Development Fund represents a continuation and expansion of the EU micro-projects interventions in the Niger Delta such as MPP3 and MPP6.

The state to benefit from this, according to him, included Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, Abia, Edo , Akwa-Ibom and Cross River .

Macrae said 60 of such projects covering 12 health posts, 12 educational blocks, seven open market stalls, 13 solar powered water supply schemes, four agro-processing mills and 12 civic centers would be established in 60 communities in Ondo State.
